Lazada appoints new CEO

James Dong took over the position in last week. 

Southeast Asian e-commerce platform Lazada has appointed James Dong as its CEO, the Alibaba Group announced.

Dong has been with Lazada since 2018 when he headed the regional operations of the company in Thailand and Vietnam. 

He will takeover outgoing CEO Chun Li, who served as Lazada’s chief since 2020. Li will continue his role as a board member and advisor to Lazada Group Chairman Jiang Fan.

Despite his appointment as Lazada’s CEO, Dong will continue in his capacity as CEO of Lazada Thailand. He will also serve as the chief executive of Lazada Indonesia. 

His role in Vietnam, meanwhile, will be filled by Kaya Qin, who previously worked as its COO.

“[James is] a well-liked leader amongst locals, passionately sharing his knowledge and to cultivate a strong local bench force,” a spokesperson said in a statement. 

Dong will be based at the  Lazada One, the company’s new regional headquarters in Singapore.
