Central Food Group trials AI-powered system to reduce store food waste

Amongst the key features are automatic detection and optimal recycling.

Thailand’s Central Food Group has announced that it will trial an innovative and AI-powered system developed by Smartway to address the country’s food waste issue.

Starting in the second quarter of 2024, five Tops stores in Bangkok and surrounding areas will implement Smartway's digitised food waste management solutions.

Smartway's technology uses artificial intelligence to identify products nearing their expiration dates, apply discounts of 20% to 40%, and enhance ordering processes to minimise waste. The system aims to reduce food waste, boost customer purchasing power, and improve store efficiency.

Already adopted by over 2,000 stores worldwide, Smartway's Food Waste Management System has prevented over 250m products from being wasted.

Key features include automatic detection through the "GPS Short Date" system that identifies soon-to-expire products, optimal recycling that determines the best recycling channel for profitability, automated discounts with unique labels for nearing-expiration products, and enhanced ordering processes for accuracy and waste reduction.

Central Food Group’s partnership with Smartway is expected to set a new standard in food waste management in Thailand, benefiting stores, employees, and customers alike.
