Japan’s consumer co-ops raise $6.5m for Ukraine

The proceeds has been donated to UNICEF and other organizations.

Some 33 consumer co-ops and co-op federations across Japan have raised around $6.52m (JPY880.34m) in a bid to support Ukraine after Russia launched an invasion in the eastern European country last February, Japanese Consumers' Co-operative Union (JCCU) said.

The donations were collected through donation boxes placed in consumer co-op stores and home delivery order forms, the union said. The collected amount was subsequently donated to the Japan Committee for United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and other organizations that support Ukrainian refugees.

JCCU and 107 consumer co-ops and co-op federations nationwide have issued statements of protest against the invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops. The union vowed to continue supporting activities that “bring the people of Ukraine together.”
