Malaysia's retail sales jumped 13% to $1.15b in June
This was mainly driven by a 20.2% growth in the automotive fuel segment.
Retail trade sales in Malaysia rose 13% MoM to $1.15b (RM4.8b) in June, according to data from the Department of Statistics. On a YoY basis, sales declined 8.4%.
The sales growth was driven by automotive fuel, which jumped 20.2%, as well as other goods in specialised stores (18.8%) and cultural & recreation goods (17.9%). Also recording growth were other household equipment (16.7%) and information & communication equipment (13.7%).
Sales volume expanded 18.8% over the same period. In line with the sales value, the increase was depicted in automotive fuel (30%), other goods (27.9%), cultural & recreation goods (25.1%) and information & communication equipment (21.4%).
Overall, the sales value of wholesale & retail trade leapt 21.8% MoM to RM102.9b in June, mainly driven by growth in the wholesale trade and motor vehicles. Wholesale trade saw a 20.3% MoM growth, whilst motor vehicle sales surged 78.9%.
