Consumers opt for experiential gifts this holiday season

They are leaning toward gifts that foster connection and create lasting memories.

Consumers are shifting their holiday shopping preferences this year, with many prioritising sentimental and experiential gifts over traditional material items, according to the latest Amex Trendex report from American Express.

The report showed that approximately one-third of respondents plan to purchase gifts for significant others (38%) or children (32%) that focus on shared experiences.

The most popular experiential gifts include entertainment (59%), travel (54%), and food and drink experiences (49%). Amongst friends, 69% prefer to exchange fun experiences or trips instead of conventional gifts.

Additionally, over two-thirds (73%) of consumers express a desire for sentimental gifts rather than traditional options.

Most respondents also favor receiving sentimental gifts (70%), gifts from small businesses (67%), or live experiences (65%) over physical items.
